First Klallam Dictionary Published

The first Klallam dictionary was recently compiled by linguist Timothy Montler and published by the University of Washington Press.

Montler, a University of North Texas linguist, first began documenting the Klallam written language in 1978. He interviewed elders from the Lower Elwha Klallam, Jamestown S’Klallam, Port Gamble Klallam and the Scia’new First Nation of Vancouver Island. From these interviews, Montler was able to develop the Klallam alphabet.

Every Port Gamble S’Klallam family and tribal government department now has a copy of the 1,008-page dictionary. Copies are available for sale on Amazon and from the University of Washington Press.
