New Immersion Daycare Seeks to Increase Lakota Bilingualism

A new immersion daycare in Pine Ridge, SD will teach infants and toddlers the Lakota language.

Founded by Peter Hill, the daycare center seeks to increase the number of fluent Lakota speakers on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. According to the daycare’s website, Hill plans to speak only Lakota during the center’s business hours. By immersing children in the Lakota language at a young age, Hill seeks to enhance the number of bilingual Lakota speakers on the reservation.

The center is currently accepting a limited number of children after researching the effectiveness of language immersion centers. There are currently ten children on the center’s waiting list.
